An anti-littering campaign

Zimbabwe Yakachena.

yah-kah-CHEH-nah · "Zimbabwe is clean"

Our streets, rivers and kombi ranks hold what we drop on them. This campaign is about small daily habits that keep rubbish where it belongs, from Harare to Victoria Falls.

0 picked up

Tap the rubbish to pick it up.

Why it matters

Litter doesn't stay where it lands.

Rainy season

It blocks the drains

Plastic bags and bottles wash into storm drains. When the summer rains come, blocked drains turn roads into rivers and flood homes and markets.

Air

It gets burned

Piles of rubbish often end up on fire. Burning plastic releases smoke that families, children and street vendors breathe every day.

Animals

Livestock eat it

Goats and cattle graze near roads and dumps. Plastic in their stomachs can kill them, and that is a family's savings lost.

Pride

It's how visitors see us

Clean streets say something about who we are. Tourism and local business both do better in a town people want to walk through.

Three habits

Start with what's in your hand.

Chengeta.
Keep it until you find a bin.

Wrapper, airtime card, bottle. Pocket it, bag it, carry it home. Never out of the kombi window.

Uya nebhegi.
Bring your own bag.

Take a reusable bag to Mbare, the supermarket and the tuckshop. Say no to the extra plastic one.

Nhanho imwe.
Pick up one piece a day.

One piece, every day, on your own street. It adds up faster than anyone expects.

The pledge

Make it yours, then share it.

Organise a clean-up

Your street, one Saturday morning.

Pick a spot and a time

A road, a kombi rank, a school ground, a stretch of river. Early Saturday is cool and quiet.

Tell your neighbours

Post it in the WhatsApp group, at church, at the tuckshop. Ten people clear a lot more than one.

Take a "before" photo

Same angle before and after. That photo is what makes people join the next one.

Sort as you collect

Bottles and cans in one bag for recyclers, everything else in another. Hand recyclables to local collectors.

Post the "after"

Share both photos with #ZimbabweYakachena so others can copy the idea in their own area.
